Your Breastmilk is a gift only you can give to your newborn.

Why breastmilk?

It is special because your milk is made naturally by your body specifically for your infant. Your breast milk is a special "recipe" to help your baby grow, develop and stay healthy.

Breast milk decreases illness, SIDS, and asthma; also protects to decrease obesity and heart disease as growing adults

For Mom
  • Breastfeeding helps you return to your pre-pregnant weight faster
  • Helps to prevent postpartum depression
  • Protects from some forms of female cancers
  • Prevents forms of osteoporosis later in your life
  • Less expensive than formula and bottle feeding
  • Creates a very special bond with your infant

For Dad
  • Diapers do not smell as bad
  • Healthier baby and mom, less doctor visits
  • Less days of work for sickness
  • Creates a special feeding time to bond with mom and baby

Thinking about breastfeeding?

Although breastfeeding is natural, it sometimes takes a little more work at the beginning.  Birth events can effect the breastfeeding dyad.
It is important that you let your healthcare team know you want to breastfeed.

Steps to have a successful start
  • Immediate Skin-To-Skin
  • Let baby latch self within first hour
  • Say no to bottles and pacifiers in the hospital
  • Feed every 2 to 2 1/2 hours
  • If separation occurs - ask for a hospital grade pump to start stimulation - this helps to protect milk supply for later months
  • Ask for a lactation person to visit you in the hospital before going home

Learn more by taking a breastfeeding class with your partner.  This is key to success.
